"Luna" Irish Dexter

I just recently picked up a Dexter heifer in Western Colorado. The previous owner tells me she is due to calf in 30-60 days. I am taking this bit of information on faith becasue she has never been preg tested. If it turns out my heifer is "open"....then I probably over paid! Regardless she is a cute little thing. My children named her Luna; she turns two in April. We have had Herefords in the past, mostly steer. Our goal is to train Luna as a milker, but she is awfully timid. I don't think she has ever been handled. I have not forced the issue as she is adjusting to her new home. I let her out to pasture and she enjoys chasing our alpacas. Watching four alpacas and one cow interact has been amusing. Luna cannot figure out why her new herd looks and acts so strange! At least she has companions! We are working on getting to know Luna and getting her to relax. We cannot touch her. I can get with in a few feet but she is very cautious. Last night I tried grain thinking I could coax her in and maybe just touch her. No way.
We will continue to befriend our "Luna". I believe she has a sweet disposition but needs more time to adjust.

Bovine- soon to be back.

Next week we gain another member of the family and I'm only partially refering to children this time. I put down the deposit and signed the bill of sale on one 2 yr old Dexter heifer. Why? I'm not sure. I like the idea of having an animal grazing my property. Why else do we irrigate our desert landscape? It may repulse the neighbors but if I don't have animals I don't water the grass. Its bad enough that year after year we continue to saturate our dry desert soil while the folks down river scream and holler becasue their newly formed HOA laid claim to it. Irrigating thousands of lawns across state borders just so they look acceptable does not strike me as a sustainable. And then there are the golf courses...My cows do my mowing and this year perhaps some of the shopping. See the heifer due to be picked up next week is carrying a calf, at least I hope the owner is on the up about that. If not the deal is not as sweet. Either way, this year we have a vessel. A mama that we hope will produce a fine little calf to which we will share milk with. Yes, why not take advantage of 100% pure, grass fed, unpastuerized whole milk. Exciting I know! More to come....
